ATLANTA — Atlanta has been named one of America's "roachiest" cities, according to a new study by home services company Pest Gnome.

The ranking placed Atlanta as the seventh most "roachiest" out of 25 other U.S. cities. The city ranked high in several areas of the creepy crawly list, coming in second in the number of homes with the most signs of cockroaches within the past 12 months.

Several other metro areas made the list, with Houston coming in first for roach activity.

Here are the top 10 cities on the list:

  1. Houston, TX
  2. San Antonio, TX
  3. Tampa, FL
  4. Phoenix, AZ
  5. Las Vegas, NV
  6. Miami, FL
  7. Atlanta, GA
  8. Birmingham, AL
  9. Dallas, TX
  10. Oklahoma City, OK

Pest Gnome says the results were determined by using data from the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and considering the climates of each location for the rankings.

Roaches love warmth and heat, and considering Atlanta's sunny climate for most of the year, it seems fitting that the southern city topped the list.

To prevent roaches from roaming in your home, Pest Gnome recommends sealing any points of entry, cleaning up any stray crumbs, fixing leaky pipes and using Raid and roach motels. If the problem persists, it may be time to call an exterminator.
