What to do when jokes aren't funny and how to react

Blanca Cobb explains why some jokes land flat and how to avoid offending people when you make a joke.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We've all been there - you crack a joke, and it lands with a thud instead of a laugh. Maybe it offended someone, or perhaps it just missed the mark entirely. So, what do you do when a joke goes wrong?

When you realize your joke went flat, take a deep breath and acknowledge the mistake. You could say something like, "I'm sorry, that joke didn't go as planned. It wasn't funny at all. I didn't mean to offend you."

You should stay away from jokes that put someone down or make fun of them, such as stereotypes, sensitive topics like someone's personal pain or tragedy, and someone's personal life.

If you have to think twice about whether a joke is appropriate, then it's probably best not to say it.
