The translation to adulthood after college graduation

Experts help recent grads navigate their post-graduation journey into the workforce.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — For many, college is a path to a dream career. But what happens when that path leads… nowhere? In today's economic climate, it's common for college grads to get an email that starts with "We appreciate your interest, but..."

Many college grads aren't landing jobs in their field, leaving them wondering about the value of their degree. They've spent four years studying, and a ton of money, and now, they're applying everywhere for jobs that may not even need a college degree. It can be disheartening. Some college majors may not directly translate into specific jobs.

Some college grads get jobs that aren’t in their field, and they enjoy the work even if it's not high paying. There's no need to feel that your college degree was a waste in these cases. Your college degree equipped you with valuable skills such as communication, critical thinking, and research that apply to many fields. You can find ways to make your degree work for you, even if the path isn't a straight line. You have to decide what's important in a job.

Some college grads feel judged for not following a traditional career path. If you land a job that doesn't match your degree, remember that a job title doesn't determine your worth. Although you don't owe your family and friends an explanation for your decisions, it helps to talk to your parents about your decision, job satisfaction, skills you're developing, and your long-term goals.
