CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Let's face it, no one likes having to call customer service, but there are times when it's unavoidable. But Lifehacker has some advice on how to have a successful customer service call.

Here are the three mistakes many people make when calling customer service:

Coming in hot

It makes sense that whatever led to a customer service call was probably frustrating, but Lifehacker wants everyone to remember that the frustration felt shouldn't be taken out on a customer service representative. In fact, doing that might make matters worse. The bottom line is: The person on the other end of the line is a human being simply trying to do their job. Instead, try to explain what happened and get them to understand your point of view so they want to help you.

Being unprepared

Don’t dial the number until you have gathered everything you might need to help your case, which could include your account information, relevant model numbers, any prior correspondence or any other things that are relevant to your case. Lifehacker says making the customer service representative’s life easier will most likely work in your favor.

Being unwilling to compromise

In a perfect world, everything would go exactly how we’d like, but we all know the world doesn’t work that way. Yes, it’s important to hold the company accountable and not accept anything less than what you deserve, but according to Lifehacker, it’s also important to know there are limitations. Customer service representatives might not be able to provide you with the exact solution you have in mind. It’s why Lifehacker suggests being open to the idea that there are multiple ways to solve a problem.
