Great Grandmother D.D. & Austin: Prom 2014

ROCKFORD, Ohio-- It's prom season across the country and there are always some wonderful and special stories that you hear about before, during and after prom night.

Prom night this year at one high school in Ohio, included the usual cast of juniors, seniors and their dates. However, one young man's date got the attention of everyone and now the media. That's because senior Austin Dennison's date was his 89-year-old great-grandmother. Yes, his great-grandmother!

Austin told WFMY News 2 via telephone he got the idea while in economics class, after his professor said he took his grandmother when he was in high school. The teacher said his grandmother never had the chance to attend her prom so he took her as his date.

Austin said, when he went home he called his great-gradmother, Delores Dennison and asked her if she would be his date to the prom. Austin said she had told him that she never attended her prom. His grandmother thought he was joking and Austin said he had to ask her several times. Austin said when she asked again if he was serious again, he said "yeah grandma," I want you to be my date to the prom.

And and on Saturday, April 14, Austin took his date, 89-year-old Delores to Parkway High's Prom. Austin told WFMY News 2 that his grandmother said she had a great time, they danced and took pictures.

You may say Austin is wired to help others, considering the already busy high school senior is an Eagle Scout and Volunteer Firefighter. He plans to attend Florida Gulf Coast University when he graduates in a few weeks. Austin said he plans to get a degree in Exercise Science and take pre-med classes. He also wants to be a full-time firefighter.

He said he chose that school because coincidentally his great-grandma use to live in that area.

Although this story happened hundreds of miles away from Greensboro, North Carolina, the home of WFMY News 2, it was such a neat and heartwarming story, we wanted to share it with you.
