Coast Guard Investigates Possibility Of Staged Disappearance In McDermott Case

The missing boyfriend of singer Olivia Newton-John appears to have been deeply in debt.

Los Angeles, CA -- The missing boyfriend of singer Olivia Newton-John appears to have been deeply in debt. Court documents reviewed by The Associated Press indicate Patrick Kim McDermott filed for bankruptcy in 2000 and was recently dragged into court by his ex-wife, actress Yvette Nipar. Nipar sued in April over payments for the couple's 13-year-old son, according to the documents. McDermott's filing in bankruptcy court in 2000 indicates he owed a total of nearly $31,000. McDermott failed to return from a fishing trip off the California coast on June 30. He was reported missing a week later by Nipar, who was alarmed when he didn't show up for a family event. A Coast Guard spokesman says it's investigating McDermott's disappearance as a missing person's case. He says the Coast Guard is looking at all possibilities, including whether McDermott staged his disappearance.
