Helping families put food on the table: WFMY News 2's Food 2 Families food drive is back!

April 12 - 13, 2024 donate food at participating locations to benefit the Greensboro Urban Ministry's client choice pantry. The CEO explains how your donations help.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Helping our neighbors in need! WFMY News 2's Food 2 Families Food Drive is back.

This Friday and Saturday, you can bring donations to participating Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Walmart Stores, and Food Lion locations in Guilford County.  All donations benefit the Greensboro Urban Ministry.

Your donations will help to stock the shelves of the Greensboro Urban Ministry Food Pantry. The GUM Food Pantry is a "choice" pantry where guests get to come in and choose the foods they would like to take home.

“Folks get to shop and pick up what they need for their family and their children," Brian Hahne, CEO of GUM, said. We have fresh produce, perishable and nonperishable items, and it’s just a way to meet the need in this community."

The pantry provides emergency groceries to community members struggling to access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy diet.

“We’re seeing on average 165 households a day, that’s not individuals, that’s families,” Hahne said. “Sometimes as high as 175 to 180 households a day. The need has gone up as folks are making hard choices about food costs, gas prices, and choices about needs for their kids. We are a solution and a partner in that effort where they can make healthy food choices so that they can meet the needs of their families each week.”

If you can't attend the food drive, you can donate money to the Greensboro Urban Ministry by clicking here. Select: Donate to Food Pantry.

“The food that we purchase, especially those fresh food items, we can stretch and meet a lot of needs,” Hahne said. “On average, we distribute about 100,000 pounds of food a month. Your donations go a long way. The Cone Health Foundation stepped up, they heard about our need and gave us a $10,000 grant to support this effort, and we’re asking the community to come out and match that.”
