CMPD officers hurt in deadly ambush released from hospital

The officers were injured when a U.S. Marshals task force was serving arrest warrants at a home on Galway Drive on April 29.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers who were injured in a deadly shooting in east Charlotte last week have been released from the hospital, CMPD announced on Tuesday. 

Officers Chris Tolley, Michael Giglio, Jack Blowers and Justin Campbell are out of the hospital and recovering, CMPD said. They were injured during an ambush that killed four law enforcement officers, including CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, on April 29. The suspect was killed by police during the shootout. The shooting happened when a U.S. Marshals task force was serving warrants at a home on Galway Drive in east Charlotte.

"We continue to be overwhelmed by daily by the support and kindness shown," CMPD said. "Thank you to all who have reached out and continue to keep the CMPD family in your thoughts."

CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said the safety of his people is what keeps him up at night.

"I know that they are put in some very difficult situations. They have to be all things to all people a lot of times and you know, they're scrutinized to no end," Jennings said. "I want to make sure that they're OK and when I go to bed at night and when I wake up in the middle of the night and I think that my first thoughts is that we remain safe and that we keep our community safe."

Numerous fundraisers were launched in the aftermath of the shooting to benefit the families of the officers who were killed. Dozens of Charlotte-area McDonald's restaurants joined the effort, announcing that 10% of sales on Tuesday would go toward the families of officers who were wounded or killed during the shooting.
