GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro man will spend about three years in prison after he impersonated a DEA agent.
A judge sentenced Khriy Simon Tuesday to 33 months. He will have a year of supervised release once he gets out.
Simon was convicted in January 2024. He impersonated a DEA agent in March 2023.
Evidence shows he approached two people in a parking lot on Bridford Parkway in a tactical vest while holding a weapon. He yelled at the people inside the car and demanded they put their hands up, identifying himself as part of the DEA. Simon told the people that they looked like murder suspects and had to search their car.
Simon later detained one of the people in the car. He conferred with someone in another car, who investigators later discovered was working with Simon, before letting her go.
Simon told the people involved several times throughout the incident that he worked for the DEA.
"By impersonating a law enforcement officer, the defendant endangered the lives of both victims and other citizens in the surrounding area,” United States Attorney Sandra Hairston said. “The investigation and prosecution of this case, and the sentence imposed today, send a clear message that such reprehensible conduct will not be tolerated.”
Simon has never been a part of the DEA. Greensboro police worked with the FBI on the case.
