GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The Guilford County Sheriff's Office said a man who crashed in front of a school last week is now facing a second-degree murder charge after a 2-month-old baby in his vehicle died.

The crash happened in front of Vandalia Christian School on April 16. Deputies said they were attempting a traffic stop on 28-year-old Alton Johnny Bright Jr. before he sped off, sparking a chase that ended in a crash.

Bright's three other passengers in his car, one adult, and two juveniles, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to deputies.

Investigators said because of the child’s death, an additional arrest warrant for the driver, Bright Jr., Tuesday, for second-degree murder in connection with the incident.

Bright Jr. was served with the warrant and is currently in custody at the Greensboro Detention Center. He will be held without bond until his first appearance.

Guilford County Sheriff Danny Rogers has since released a statement to the family:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a child is a heartbreaking event that no family should ever have to endure. Let us come together as a community to support each other and recommit ourselves to ensuring the safety of all who travel on our roads."
