GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said a son is dead and a father is facing a murder charge after a late-night shooting.
Police said officers went out to an assault and shooting call along the 3800 block of Belhaven Drive Saturday night shortly before 11:30 p.m.
Officers said the 911 caller told them that the father had shot his son.
When officers arrived, an armed man was seen walking into the woods at the dead end of Belhaven. Officers used a K-9 and a drone to locate the man, identified as Larry Wendell Hilliard, 78.
He surrendered to officers and was taken into custody.
Officers said police found Larry Todd Hilliard, 56, inside the home with a gunshot wound, he died from his injuries.
Larry Wendell Hilliard is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault by pointing a gun. He is in the Guilford County Jail without bond.
WFMY News 2 spoke to neighbors who live across the street, they told us the Belhaven neighborhood is quiet and friendly. They believe the alleged behavior described by police simply doesn't make sense.
"He was a really nice guy, if we needed something he would help us." neighbors Miguel Lopez and Christina Miranda said, "He didn't cause any trouble."
GPD has not shared a motive or the mental state of Hilliard Sr. during the alleged events. We do know that this tragedy is an active investigation.
This is the 13th homicide in Greensboro this year.
