GCS Board of Education approves budget proposal to increase wages, enhance operations across the district

Now it heads to the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The Guilford County Schools (GCS) Board of Education has approved a budget for the 2024-2025 school year on May 7. The plan now heads to the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

The plan is said to maintain critical programs and increase staff pay as federal pandemic relief funds end, as well as increase funding to charter schools.

The plan includes a $40.3 million increase in funding for operations costs, higher teacher supplements, an improved salary plan for classified staff, continued safety and tutoring initiatives, start-up costs for new schools, and a raise in the charter school allotment.

The school board is setting aside almost $44 million for charter schools as mandated by the state.

The plan also includes eliminating old systems, combining some school and office buildings, and making transportation more efficient.

If the Guilford County Board of Commissioners agrees, the school district will get over $304 million for the 2024-25 school year. They're also expecting about $91 million from the federal government and $485 million from the state, subject to final approval from the North Carolina General Assembly.

The school district also plans to spend $17.7 million on HVAC, building and roof repairs, getting new vehicles and equipment, and fixing up school sites.

The county will talk about the budget on June 6 and must decide by July 1.

GCS plans to adopt an interim budget resolution at the June 27 board meeting to continue operations in the new fiscal year while awaiting the state's final budget adoption and allocation.
