9 people lose their home in Winston-Salem apartment fire

Winston-Salem Fire Department said six adults and three children were displaced.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Several people are displaced after a fire in Winston-Salem.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department responded to the Plaza South Apartment Homes on Plaza Ridge Circle around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Firefighters rescued one person from a balcony.

Winston-Salem Fire said six adults, three children, and a pet were displaced.

Four apartment units were impacted by the blaze.

"One unit was a complete loss due to fire damage and there were three other units involved with water and smoke damage," WSFD Battalion Chief John Suders said.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, according to fire officials.

"If you are going to cook, make sure that you are staying in the kitchen," Chief Suders said, "It's an accident, the poor young lady lost everything."

He said the nine people and pet displaced were all home during the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross said it is providing resources to the impacted families.
