The Stock Market, Your Tax Dollars & Your Hometown Safety

Teacher pay, road work and law enforcement money can be affected.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The stock market took a dive at the end of the year. Thankfully, it's now on it's way back up. And if right now you're thinking to yourself, "Why do I care? I don't have anything in the market." The answer is, you do.

Your taxpayer money is tied up in those stocks in the form of pensions for state workers. And if state, county and city employers have to put more money away to cover what they're supposed to put in the pension fund, that means less money available for teacher pay, public safety and road work.

State Treasurer Dale Folwell says a source of pride for NC is that we have one of the best funded pension plans in the US. But again, that means at times, we may be funding other needs less.
