These NC Politicians Also Received Money from Business Owner Charged in Bribery, Wire Fraud Investigation

WFMY News 2 is digging deeper into the case to give you more context about the suspect's involvement in NC politics. There is no reason to believe the politicians are involved in the bribery case.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina investment firm manager Greg Lindberg is charged along with the state GOP Chairman, Robin Hayes, and two other associates with bribery and conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. Investigators say the group promised to give Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey donations to help out Lindberg's insurance business.

But court filings show Causey stopped the scheme by reporting it to the authorities.

A spokesperson for the NC GOP said they had no comment at the moment. And a spokesperson for Lindberg sent us this statement:

“Greg Lindberg is innocent of the charges in the indictment and we look forward to demonstrating this when we get our day in court,” said Anne Tompkins, Lindberg’s attorney.

2 Wants To Know's Ben Briscoe pulled campaign finance records for Lindberg over the past three years.

You can see he's donated to both Republicans and Democrats. And most of his donations went to political pacs. That makes it hard to track the money from there. But from the Triad, we are able to document that Congressman Mark Walker's campaign received the most money, $233,600. Senator Richard Burr's campaign received $5,400. And Congressman Ted Budd's campaign received $2,700.

Donations of Greg Lindberg from 2016-2018 complied by 2 Wants To Know from Federal Election Commission records.

Editor's note: There is no reason at this point to believe the politicians are involved in bribery. We just wanted to give you more context about the suspect's involvement in North Carolina politics.

2 Wants To Know has reached out to Senator Burr and Representatives Walker and Budd for a response.

A representative for Mark Walker said: "Walker is not and never has been a target of this investigation, and has committed no wrongdoing. He has assisted the Department of Justice."

And a spokesperson for Ted Budd wrote: "In light of the recent indictment, Ted Budd for Congress has decided to donate his entire contribution to the Dragonfly House Children's Advocacy Center located in Mocksville."

We're still waiting to hear back from Richard Burr. We contacted his office for comment multiple times since Wednesday morning.

This is a version of the story that aired on WFMYNews2.com first while we were still waiting for Ted Budd's statement also:
