A Day of Service: Honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s Legacy By Serving Your Community

Several organizations will be holding events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — In order to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., several schools, universities, and organizations will host events around the Triad in King's honor for 'MLK Day 2019."

GREENSBORO

MLK Jr. Day of Service At Four SeasonsTown Centre 

The Volunteer Center in partnership with local community organizations, civic groups, Guilford County Schools, and local colleges and universities will host a Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service Monday, January 21. The event will take place at the Four Seasons Town Centre from 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The overall theme for the event is: " Everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service." Registration for the event is on the 2nd floor of the Town Centre entrance. 

Annual MLK Memorial Breakfast 

7:30 a.m. - The Greensboro Human Relations Commission (HRC) will host its annual Memorial Breakfast honoring the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 21. The event is at the Koury Convention Center located at 3121 Gate City Blvd. Tickets are $20 and can be reserved by calling the City of Greensboro Human Relations Department at (336) 373-2038. The keynote speaker will be Janaye Ingram.

Greenway Ribbon Cutting & MLK Jr. Bust Dedication 

2:00 p.m.- The Downtown Greenway has planned a Ribbon Cutting for the completed portion of the Downtown Greenway from Eugene to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd along Bragg Street. The event will take place Monday at the corner of Bragg Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd following the MLK Jr. Parade.

HIGH POINT

MLK Day of Service 

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, members of the community can sign up to participate in 35 service projects organized by High Point University that will be taking place throughout the city on January 21. 

Community members can join HPU students and facility an sign up to participate here. Registration closes Jan. 18. The projects will take place on High Point University's campus and at other partner agencies in High Point.

HPU's Annual MLK Day Worship Service

11:00 a.m. - High Point University will hold it's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day worship service at 11 a.m. on January 21. The event will be held in the Charles E. Hayworth Sr. Memorial Chapel. The service is open to the public, it will also be streamed live at www.highpoint.edu/live and www.facebook.com/HighPointU

WINSTON-SALEM

United Way of Forsyth County 

8:30 a.m. - This year United Way of Forsyth County, in observance of the MLK Day of Service, is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank for a canned food drive to help support the increased need for food in light of the Government Shutdown. 

Beginning January 21 and going through Friday, January 25th from 8:30-5:00 pm each day the United Way of Forsyth County will be collecting canned foods at their office at 301 N. Main Street, Winston Tower, 17th tower.

39th Annual MLK Noon Hour Commemoration (Winston-Salem)

12 Noon - The 39th Annual MLK  Commemoration will take place at Union Baptist Church at 1200 Trade Street, NW in Winston-Salem on January 21. This year's event will feature Melisssa Harris-Perry as the keynote speaker. Professor Melissa Harris-Perry is the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University. 

19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Keynote 

7:00 p.m. - Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest will present the 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Keynote featuring CNN political commentator Angela Rye. The theme for the keynote is "On Common Ground: Embracing Our Voices." The keynote will take place on Monday, January 21 in the K.R. Williams Auditorium on the campus of WSSU.

2019 Martin Luther King National Holiday Celebration 

This celebration will mark the 33rd Anniversary of the King National Holiday and the18th Anniversary of the weeklong local event.

(Tickets $30 for adults, $15 for children under 12)
