Dumpster Diving: Yes, identity thieves still look through your trash.

You need to shred those credit card offers, bank statements, and medical paperwork.

GREENSBORO, N.C. —  A week from today,  cars will be lined up at the Greensboro Coliseum for the WFMY News 2 Shred-A-Thon. This is an opportunity for you to protect your identity for free.

"Unfortunately today with the dark web there is a lot of consumer information that may have been breached and a lot of times internet criminals are looking for other fragments of information to put it together like your address, and Social Security number, and so you want to have an efficient strategy you can in order to protect your identity and that is shredding on a regular basis," said Chuck Bell of Consumer Reports.

When you bring your paperwork to the shred,  it goes into a bin and into the PROSHRED- Raleigh truck. Here's what happens from there:

The PROSHRED trucks unload into an enclosure that has a dust collection system. All that paper produces a great amount of dust.

Once the paper drops from the truck and onto a covered conveyor the paper will be fed into a baler which compresses the shredded paper into bales that weigh up to 1,300 pounds.

Each bale is loaded onto a trailer and transported to a local pulp and paper facility where it is ultimately made into tissue products
