Fight Between Gangs Led to Deadly High Point Park Shooting, Police Say

Police say James Murray Jr. died in the shooting at Washington Terrace Park and a 13-year-old girl was hurt, but there's no evidence to suggest they were intended targets or even involved in gangs.

HIGH POINT, North Carolina — High Point Police believe a fight between two gangs is what led to a deadly shooting at Washington Terrace Park on Sunday night.

18-year-old James Murray Jr. of Kernersville died, and a 13-year-old girl was shot in the leg. Police say a park ranger found Murray shot in the back and tried to save his life, but was unsuccessful. The girl was treated and released from the hospital.

Police say there's no evidence to suggest Murray or the girl were intended targets or involved in gang activity.

Investigators have learned that before the shooting, several people were playing basketball on the courts inside the park when one person noticed two men standing behind a tree on the hill near Boundary Avenue.

Police say one person on the hill began shooting down toward the basketball court, and someone on the basketball court fired back.

When officers arrived, they say several people were running from the scene.

Police have identified some of the people who were on the basketball court during the shooting, and are familiar with them because of their involvement with gang activity.

Police will conduct a flyer response on the streets surrounding Washington Terrace Park on Tuesday, March 19 at 2 p.m.

Anyone with information should call Detective Blackman at 336-887-7834 or Crimestoppers of High Point at 336-889-4000.
