Girl Talk event in High Point helps families navigate puberty

The event for teen girls and their guardians is a workshop to help get the whole family on the same page.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Next weekend there's a workshop to help families with teens going through puberty. Girl Talk will be at the Millis Regional Health Center in High Point on April 27 for teen girls and their adult guardians. There's also a separate event for sons and fathers later on. It's a space where the family can get information about puberty together.
Ahead of the workshop - one of the counselors shared advice on how to break the ice about this topic with your teen.

"Sometimes it's easier if you're not sitting down and having a face-to-face conversation. That puts a lot of pressure on things. So maybe if you're going for a walk. Or maybe in the car because there's no expectation of eye contact in that situation," said Paige Schidkamp. "Or trying something a little different. Some young people prefer a different type of communication as texting and social media is really big right now. Have a journal where they can ask a question and put it in a spot, and the parent knows if it's there then they have a question for me. And you can take that and write and answer back."

The non-profit Poe Center is putting on Girl Talk. You can find out more about the event on their website

“It was such a comfortable, fun, and educational experience for us all," says a recent workshop participant. "It was so refreshing to see my daughter speaking with such ease about a topic that historically girls and women have struggled to be so open about."

Registration is $30.00 per adult/child pair. Additional participants are $12.00 each.
