Help your neighbors in need stay warm this winter season

Berico will match your generous donation to www.giftofwarmth.com

GREENSBORO, N.C. — As temperatures continue to drop across the Triad, many will be cranking up the heat. Unfortunately, that isn’t always an option for the one in four Triad families who can’t afford to heat their homes.

Thankfully, Berico and the Salvation Army of Greensboro formed a partnership to get emergency help to families who need it. It’s called Gift of Warmth. WFMY News 2 is happy to be a part of this year’s fundraising campaign.

Will Berry with Berico said the campaign has been able to assist over 1400 families through cold winter nights.

“About 18 years ago, Berico realized we would commonly get requests for assistance,” Berry said. “We realized the need is beyond Berico customers. In the Triad, one in four homes are living below the poverty line. Some are going without heat every night. We’ve partnered with the Salvation Army and help raise funds each year and we’ll match funds to support the cause.”

All money raised is distributed through the Salvation Army, directly to families who can’t afford to heat their homes. Berico is not just helping its customers, but anyone who qualifies for the program.

Cpt. Chris Raymer with the Salvation Army of Greensboro said he sees the need daily.

“Men, women, and children should not have to go to bed at night in the cold,” Cpt. Raymer said. “We don’t want people to have to choose between putting a plate of food on the table for their child or making sure the home is heated. There are options out there and we just need families to know that there is support.”

The campaign helps those who live in Rockingham County, Alamance County, and Guilford County. Cpt. Raymer said those in need of help can apply in person at the Salvation Army of Greensboro on Freeman Mill Road or the organization’s website.

“One challenge I give to our community is, to cut your heat off for one night over the next week,” Berry said. “If you wake up the next morning, I bet you’ll want to donate.”

The 2022-2023 Gift of Warmth fundraising campaign raised $92,734. Organizers hope to beat that for the 2023-2024 season.
