VERIFY: Can The Triad Get A Lot of Snow In March, April?

You ask; we VERIFY. Is it true the Triad could get a lot of snow in March and April?

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's midway through a Triad winter, and already the snowfall totals have been impressive, ever since a 12-inch snowstorm set records in December. WFMY News 2 viewers are wondering what is in store next.

VERIFY QUESTION

Is it true we could see a lot of snow in March?

Is it true the Triad has experienced snow as late as April?

VERIFY SOURCE

  • Meteorologist Terran Kirksey

VERIFY PROCESS

Data dating back to the early 1900s shows March is the Triad's third-snowiest month, behind January and February.

On average, the Triad receives less than one inch -- .08 inch -- in March, but there has been as much as 21.3 inches in March 1960 (remember all those 'Wednesday' snows?).

"Since the qualifier 'could' is in the question, this is true, yet unlikely to see a lot in March on a year-to-year basis," Kirksey explained.

Furthermore, an April snow is not out of the question.

"There have been several years with trace amounts of snowfall in April. That just means that snow fell, but there wasn't enough snowfall for the National Weather Service to note any accumulation, not even a dusting," he said.

However, there is a big exception -- the snowstorm of April 3, 1915 dropped eight inches of snow on the Piedmont Triad area.

VERIFY CONCLUSION

The answers to both questions are true; it can snow a lot in both March and April in the Triad, though snowfalls for those months aren't as common as those in January or February.
