Greensboro Family Feels Blindsided By Housing Authority Renovations

Sherman Hatch knew the repairs were coming - but did not expect a knock at the door early Friday morning.

When the maintenance guy shows up, you're usually glad to see him - but what happens when he's not expected, and you've got to get out of the house fast?

One Greensboro family says, this happened to them Friday morning.

Sherman Hatch knew repairs were coming after a meeting last month with the Greensboro Housing Authority and was honestly happy about the fixes and upgrades to his town home on Baylor Court. Bu,t he wasn't expecting it today.

In fact, he got a letter from the Housing Authority managers last week stating repair work would wrap up on the 22nd, 23rd, and possibly the 24th of December. But the Hatch family says, the work on their unit only started today - leaving them no time to plan where to go for a number of hours.

Because it was raining, Hatch, his daughter, and grandchildren waited in the car while workers worked on drywall, painting, and flooring, until the power came back on. When they came back inside, all their belongings were piled up on their beds.

"We don't got no place to go, and they come in and put everything on the bed," said Hatch.

The Greensboro Housing Authority said workers were out there doing maintenance at the 11-home complex Friday, but had been doing work in some capacity at this complex since late November.

A spokesperson issued this statement:

"If a resident completed a reasonable accommodation form, GHA would consider a hotel room for the duration of the renovation depending on reasonable accommodation need. GHA held resident meetings in November of 2018 to advise of the construction schedule and reasonable accommodation process. However, renovations were designed for residents to stay in place and are typically completed within a two-week time frame where a resident can come and go from the unit. This process can cause short-term inconvenience, but the long-term enjoyment of an upgraded and more energy-efficient home will hopefully be worth the wait."
