Greensboro restaurant closed after catching fire Sunday morning

The fire department says the bulk of the fire was in the roof above the kitchen.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro restaurant caught fire Sunday morning.

The fire department said Culichi Mexican Seafood Bar and Grill off of West Gate City Blvd was on fire with visible smoke, and flames coming out of the top.

The department said multiple calls started coming into the station just before 7:00 a.m.

One caller to Guilford-Metro 911 believed someone was inside during the fire, but that wasn't the case.

Thankfully, there was a quick response to the scene from fire crews, allowing the fire to be under control in less than an hour.

"Another benchmark that we use is 'under control' and that’s really where we have everything on the scene that we can handle with the companies that we have there. We really try to wait and be very conservative with giving that 'under control' because we don’t want to give it too quickly, and not have other units coming in. It was right under an hour when we were able to give the under control when we knew we can control the fire with the units that we had on scene," Deputy Chief Church explained.

Deputy Fire Chief Dwayne Church said there are at least three fire stations this restaurant is really close to.

Deputy Chief Church said, "I was able to speak with the shift manager early in the morning yesterday (Sunday), and was able to determine that everything did go well. You have challenges that you are going to face with every fire, and of course, we had some challenges with this fire, but we were able to overcome those, and that attributed to the training that we do every day, and our guys are some of the best in the nation, in my belief. We always make an effort every day to train on what different scenarios could happen.”

No injuries were reported from this fire, the cause is still under investigation.

WFMY reached out to the owner of the Culichi but hasn't heard back.
