Bump stocks allow semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like automatic firearms.

Anyone who owns or possesses a bump stock will have 90 days to destroy or deliver their devices to any ATF location after the Trump administration bans them under a federal law prohibiting machine guns.

According to ATF Charlotte spokesperson Corey Ray, anyone still in possession of a machine gun or bump stock “would be breaking the law.”

“After this 90-day period it will no longer be legal to own such a device, so they will be expected to either destroy or deliver that to an ATF location,” Ray explained.

Ray says the ATF advises if individuals choose to destroy a device themselves, they must ensure the device is no longer functional and can no longer be repaired to function again.

“The devices can be shredded, they can be crushed, they can be melted down, as long as it’s considered destructed,” Ray added.

Local law enforcement are not required to accept bump stocks, according to ATF, they may accept them from civilians, but eventually they are going to end up at ATF offices.

If you want to turn in or deliver your bump stocks, Ray recommends making an appointment to ensure an agent is available to meet you and take possession of those devices for you.
