Is your license plate frame illegal?

You can get a ticket if your frame covers a number, letter, or state name.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — You know the license plate frames that have fuzzy overlays to keep cameras from getting a good snapshot of them are illegal, but could your everyday license plate frame be illegal too?

I went looking on Amazon for license plate covers. I found one I liked with mountains at the bottom. The problem is, that the reviews talked about how the mountain shapes were too big and covered the state name.

2 Wants To Know asked Greensboro Police about this. The statement said:

According to the statute, you cannot attach a frame or cover, even if it's completely clear, that makes a number, letter, or state name on the plate illegible.

Have you looked at your car lately? How about the other cars in your work parking lot? 2 Wants To Know found several frames that looked just fine, but then there was a handful where the state name was partially covered. You can tell the state, but you cannot see the license plate info in its entirety, which is the rule.

Can you get a ticket for an illegal license plate frame? Yes!
