Mother gets closure after Winston-Salem police arrest a suspect in son's cold case

Velma Terry spoke during a press conference in Winston-Salem Wednesday following the arrest of her son's accused murderer.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The mother of a man murdered spoke after Winston-Salem police arrested a suspect.

Police accused 28-year-old Jaquane Fair of shooting and killing Te'ore Terry in February 2021. They found him dead in a parking lot in Winston-Salem. 

Te'ore's mother, Velma Terry, thanked the Winston-Salem Police Department for sticking with the cold case. 

"I am so grateful. My family is grateful. Detective Boles, you have a place in my heart. The Terry family is so grateful. Te'Ore was such a great man, he was a great man, and we miss him so much," Velma Terry said. 

Police charged Fair with felony murder and is behind bars at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center without bond. 

What happened 

Winston-Salem police said back in February 2021, they were called to Coliseum Drive about a shooting. When they arrived, they found 35-year-old Te’ore Eugene Terry suffering from a gunshot wound, and police said he died at the scene.

Kim Thore first met Te'ore Terry while working at the CVS Pharmacy off of Hanes Mall Boulevard. 

Thore told WFMY News 2 that it was her fake fur coat that got them talking that day. Their shared love of fashion sparked an immediate connection and a friendship soon developed. Kim thought of Te'ore as an ambassador of joy. 

Later when he started working at the CVS downtown, they'd greet each other with hugs, laughter, and lots of smiles.

Te'ore's mother, Velma, commissioned the artist to honor her son's life with a painting that could comemmorate the brightness and love that he brought to people around him. The artist was happy to honor Velma's request, knowing that Te'ore was someone who had positively impacted her life and so many other lives. 

In reflecting on Te'ore's joy and kindness, Kim said, "He was just being himself."
