Neighbors Concerned About a Greensboro Transitional House

Over the past months, dozens of people have commented on the Nextdoor app about the New Day Transitional Housing facility on Old Battleground Road.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WFMY)-- Greensboro community members are raising concerns about a facility on Old Battleground Road.

Over the past month, dozens of people have commented on the Nextdoor app about the New Day Transitional Housing facility. According to neighbors, they had no idea what the facility was being used for and have seen an increase in criminal activity in that area.

Phillip Hoyme lives down the street from the property. He says the number of people walking from the facility to nearby shopping centers was concerning.

"It really seemed like a lot of people were coming and going, back and forth from the shopping there to and from the facility. It really seemed like it posed a lot more of a traffic danger than anything. You would seem ambulances over there every once and while so it peeked your interest when the ambulance or fire truck showed up," says Hoyme.

Some community members brought their concerns to the City of Greensboro.

City leaders say when it was first brought to their attention in early July, they thought it was operating as a youth mental health facility. After visiting the location, the city learned it was now a transitional house for the homeless.

The fire department was called in to inspect the building and a number of violations were found. According to the city, the facility was housing more than 30 people, which is against city code.

"On this occasion the concerns were raised by community members and as a result we have a facility that was a potential danger to citizens in the community has been closed down so we can ensure that it is in the appropriate condition. That everyone can be safe and it can contribute as it should to our community and that neighborhood in particular," says City Councilman Justin Outling.

An electrical fire broke out at the house on July 8th, which led to the house being condemned.

WFMY News 2's Hannah Brewer learned the transitional house was being operated by United Youth Care Services.

Employees say the people who were staying there are now in hotels and they don't plan on re-opening the building on Old Battleground Road. So what will happen to this building is uncertain.
