'You Can't Get it Wrong in Cancer Care': Robot Joins Cancer Center at Cone Health

The staff says it takes them 18 minutes for the same job the robot can do in five minutes.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WFMY) - Cone Health has a new robot at its Cancer Center.

The robot’s name is APOTECA Chemo. It’s an automated chemotherapy preparation system that helps increase accuracy, patient and staff safety and limits exposure to powerful medications.

"You can't get it wrong in cancer care. We have checks and double checks to make sure our patients get the chemotherapy their doctor ordered, the PharmD director, Adam Peele says.

The staff says it takes them 18 minutes for the same job the robot can do in five minutes. The robot scans bar codes to confirm the chemicals & weighs each vial. It then mixes the compound, reweighs vials and delivers the chemotherapy ready for patient use.

The cancer center is the first community hospital cancer center in the U.S. to use the APOTECA. It’s a half-million dollar system.

Adam Peele with Cone Health says the pharmacy robot adds another layer of safety because you can’t get it wrong in cancer care.
