A Greensboro woman calls WFMY News 2 after waiting several months to have her mailbox fixed

Shirley Fisher didn't know why her mail stopped being delivered.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Almost every day, Shirley Fisher would get in her motorized wheelchair and ride up to the mailbox at her apartment complex.

“I need to come check on my bills and stuff,” Fisher said.

One day late last year Fisher went to get the mail, but nothing was there. She went back the following day and still nothing. This went on a couple more days before Fisher could speak with a postal carrier who told her the mailbox was broken and needed a new lock.

“The mailman can’t put any mail in there (until it’s fixed),” Fisher said.

At that point, Fisher contacted her apartment manager and told him what was happening.

“He claims he didn’t know about it, that it was broke, he didn’t know until I brought it to his attention,” Fisher said.

Until the mailbox was fixed, Fisher had to pick her mail up at the nearest post office, which is not easy when you don’t own a car.

The issue was concerning because Fisher didn’t want to miss any bills but could only get a ride to the post office every week or so.

“I didn’t know about my light bill, my gas bill,” Fisher said.

Fisher told WFMY News 2 that the apartment manager did offer to help by having some of the bills mailed to him so he could drop them off at her apartment. The main issue, however, was getting the mailbox repaired so the postal service could put a new lock on.

“About three months (this went on), about three months until I got you involved,” Fisher said.

We were able to speak with a representative from the complex and the postal service. It didn’t take too long after we got involved before the mailbox was fixed and a new lock was put on.

“Thank you for what you did for me,” Fisher said.

The mailbox seems to be working fine and Fisher hasn’t had any more issues since.

"News 2 got the job done,” Fisher said.

We don’t promise to be able to help everyone who contacts us but we will always try to assist and in this case, Fisher will be the first to tell you we delivered.
