Staying weather aware: Gusty winds and possible severe storms for early evening

Best chance for a couple of severe storms between 6PM - 9PM

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We're not done with this storm system just yet. Morning rain and wind wasn't bad for us, but we are still looking at the potential for a few severe storms, and even a tornado risk this evening. The WFMY News 2 Weather Team is tracking it.

When is it coming?

By the end of the afternoon, the cold front will be getting closer. This could spark a second line of downpours and thunderstorms. These could grow quickly. Although there won't be very many storms, the few that form could turn severe.

There is a threat of a few severe storms and even a couple storms that could rotate. There is a low tornado threat mainly between 6 and 9pm.

Throughout the whole day we will have gusty winds. The rain will end in the evening, but gusty winds will continue for Thursday night throughout the whole day on Friday. Plan to secure outdoor objects.

Gusty winds

While thunderstorms aren't guaranteed for everyone, gusty winds are. With this system, we expect wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

It will be quite gusty from this afternoon through Friday afternoon.

This is the type of wind that can blow things around in the yard, so it's a good idea to secure loose outdoor objects. There is a low risk of a few power outages.

Winds will gust between 30 and 40 mph on Thursday and Friday.

Severe weather risk

There is some risk of thunderstorms on Thursday, from morning to evening. With the morning and midday batch of rain, the risk of storms is very low. Still, some thunder is possible, but the risk of severe storms for the first half of the day is low.

The best chance for a severe t-storm or two would be between 4p - 9p. That's when the cold front is pushing closer into our area. While we will be mostly dry during this time, any storm that can form could intensify and possibly rotate. There is a low tornado risk.

As of now, our risk for severe weather rates a 1 out of 5 on the threat scale. That means while there is a chance of storms, they aren't expected to be widespread. Storms could produce damaging wind gusts, as well as heavy rain and low risk of a tornado. Hail isn't expected.

Keep your alerts turned on and have an eye on the weather throughout the day in case any warnings need to be issued.

Rain potential

Scattered downpours are possible at times from morning to midday. Drier for the afternoon, but a few occasional thunderstorms are possible for the late afternoon and evening.

Only about half an inch of rain is expected at this point.

Nice Weekend

Most of the rain will be done by this evening. A stray shower is possible again on Friday, but not much rain is expected.

The weekend is shaping up to be beautiful. Highs will be around 70 on Saturday and around 80 on Sunday. The warmth and sunshine will continue into next week.

The normal low is 46, and the normal high is 70.
