Randolph Co. Adding 'In God We Trust' To Deputy Cruisers

Deputy cruisers in Randolph County are about to get a new addition.

ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Deputy cruisers in Randolph County are about to get a new addition.

Sheriff Robert Graves says his department is in the process of adding "In God We Trust" decals to more than 100 marked Randolph County deputy vehicles.

"Personally, I believe in God, and I am a Christian," Graves said. "And, it means a lot to me. It is our national motto, and I think we support our nation, and we support all of our citizens of our nation."

The department is adding the decals at no cost to taxpayers. They have been donated by the In God We Trust Action Committee in Lexington.

Many Randolph County residents say they agree with the department's decision.

Lisa Garner said, "I think it's very important, and it truly shows what Randolph County stands for."

"I think it's a good idea," said Caleb Faulkner. "I think, with everything negative that's going on nowadays, especially with cops and everything that's going on, I think that it kind of gives people hope that they can trust their law enforcement."

Sylvia Anderson said, "It is about God, it's not about us. It's about the God we serve."

And, Isis Fox asked, "How is it hurting someone who doesn't believe in God?"

Not everyone agrees with the department's decision. Many people have spoken out on the sheriff's office's Facebook page.

One commenter asks, "If I don't believe in your God, will you still do your tax-paid-government-duty to assist me when I'm in trouble?"

Graves says the decals will have no effect on the way his deputies serve.

"It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of service you will get," he said. "We're going to provide professional law enforcement services to all citizens in Randolph County and those traveling through."

The department is also adding new reflective stripes and American flag decals to each of its marked vehicles. Graves says the purpose is to make them more visible.
