GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Representative Jon Hardister (R-Guilford) submitted his resignation to the NC House Principal Clerk Thursday. The letter submitted states that his resignation will be effective on Monday, April 8 at 5 p.m.
He was first elected to represent NC House District 59 in Guilford County in 2012. He is now serving his 6th term.
Hardister was elected by his peers to serve as the House Majority Whip in 2017, a position that he held for nearly seven years. He is the youngest and longest-serving member in state history.
He currently serves as co-chair of the House Education - Universities Committee and the NC House Education - Appropriations Committee.
Hardister released the following statement:
There comes a time when a public servant knows it is time to start a new chapter. After serving six terms in the NC House, the time for me to start a new chapter has arrived.
Today I submitted my resignation to the NC House Principal Clerk. This will allow me to rededicate my time to family and working in the private sector. I am passionate about public service, but it is now time to shift my focus to private sector work and spending time with family.
Serving in the NC House has been the honor of a lifetime and I have cherished every moment of it. I am grateful for every person who has helped me along the way, including family, friends, constituents, colleagues, and legislative staff. I will forever be grateful for the privilege of serving in this office.
Reflecting back, I am proud of what we have accomplished in the NC House. During my time in office, I was able to play a role in lowering our tax burden, paying off billions of dollars in debt, creating a budget surplus, and helping to make North Carolina the best state for business.
Tens of thousands of new jobs have come to our state as a result of the pro-economic policies that we have enacted. All of this was done while investing in the core services of government, including education and public safety. I am proud of this record, and I am leaving office with a sense that I did my job and left the state better than it was before.
Per state statute, the Guilford County Republican Party will appoint an individual to complete the remainder of my term, which runs through December 31st of this year. I will do my best to ensure that this individual is prepared and ready to work in the upcoming legislative session.
As for my future in public service, only time will tell. We will see what doors open down the road. For now, my focus will be on spending time with family and venturing into a new phase of my professional career.
