Scammers impersonate NC workers & sell insurance policies door-to-door

Scammers are impersonating NC Department of Insurance workers and trying to sell policies.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — So often, scammers are half a world away, but the NC Department of Insurance is warning about scammers right at your front door.

"We've had reports of people going door to door and they're selling fake insurance policies and they're posing as employees of the NC Dept. of Insurance.  We have fraud in all 100 counties, but these kinds of scams, posing as Department of Insurance  employees are most prevalent in the Piedmont counties up to the Foothills," said Mike Causey, NC Department of Insurance Commissioner.

People living in Guilford, Alamance, Forsyth, and Davidson have made complaint reports about these door-to-door fake insurance workers.

"We do not and neither does any other state agency that I know of go door to door to sell anything," said Causey.

It's not just door-to-door, the scammers are calling on the phone too. Again, Causey says the department doesn't ever call anyone out of the blue and try to sell them anything.

The fraud hotline is toll-free: 888-680-7684 (NC Only). You can make an anonymous call and give information whether it's about this door-to-door scam or the phone scam that goes with it or if you witness another kind of insurance fraud like Medicare or Medicaid fraud or if someone is lying about a car or home insurance loss.

Another scam making the rounds in our area deals with lost pets. When people post about their lost pets, scammers will pose as Animal Control Officers and try and get them to pay a fee online to get access to their lost pet.
