Body found identified as missing 19-year-old in Alamance Co., sheriff says

Deputies said a body was found during the search for a missing 19-year-old and has been positively identified as Antwain Demar McDaniel.

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — The Alamance County Sheriff's Office said the human remains of Antwain Demar McDaniel, a missing 19-year-old, were found Wednesday.

Investigators said they believed he jumped into the Haw River after a police chase and crash.

During a search for him, a dive team was called after a piece of muddy clothing was spotted in the river near Travis Creek Bridge. Deputies said it appeared to be a body in the sweatshirt.

The body has since been identified as McDaniel.

McDaniel has been missing since early Sunday morning. Deputies said he got out of his car after an accident near the intersection of Durham Street Exit and Routh Road in Burlington and hasn't been seen since.

The sheriff's office shared more details about what led up to McDaniel's disappearance. Deputies said McDaniel was one of four people in the car who had tried to break into cars earlier that day.

The sheriff's office said the group got involved in a chase with police and their car crashed into an embankment in a residential area. The sheriff's office said the group ran from the car and into the woods near the Haw River.

Of the four, investigators deemed McDaniel missing. A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old are believed to have returned home and face breaking-and-entering charges. Another 18-year-old, Eddie Rogers, was arrested near the crash site and charged with six counts of felony breaking-and-entering cars.

The sheriff's office said its priority is finding McDaniel, and there are no charges against him at this time. They have 75 people searching for him along the Haw River. They are also using drones and boats.
