Special Olympics North Carolina athletes in World Games Berlin 2023

Officials said, more than 200 individuals representing 46 Special Olympics US Programs came together to make up the Special Olympics USA.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Special Olympics North Carolina athletes returned home from the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany, with medals and ribbons for their athletic achievements. 

There were nearly  7,000 Special Olympics athletes participating in Germany. 

Philip Blount is one of the athletes. He is from Charlotte, and officials said he has been actively involved with Special Olympics for 15 years, training and competing in athletics, basketball, and Unified flag football.  In Berlin, he completed the following: 

  • 100m – 5th Place
  • Shot Put – Gold Medal
  • 4x100m Relay – 6th Place

Erin Cagle is another athlete who competed. She is from Raleigh and has competed in Special Olympics since 2008 in Alpine skiing, gymnastics, and tennis. In Berlin, she competed in the following artistic gymnastics events:

  • Vaulting – Silver Medal
  • Uneven Bars – 5th Place
  • Balance Beam – 5th Place
  • Floor Exercise – 7th Place
  • All Around Competition – 4th Place

The Special Olympics World Games are the world's largest inclusive sports event.
