Triad dentist facing alarming allegations of malpractice

The State Board of Dental Examiners revoked the license of Dr. Andrew Kelly. Dr. Kelly has appealed the decision.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — UPDATE: WFMY News 2 reached out to the state dentistry board to learn why Dr. Kelly's offices remained open despite his license being revoked. The state board said Dr. Kelly has filed an appeal and the court allowed his offices to remain open until the hearing on May 8. The state board also said during this time, Dr. Kelly will not be able to see new patients and can only offer services to existing patients.

For at least 18 years, the NC State Board of Dental Examiners alleges Dr. Andrew Kelly performed negligent dental care.

He operates the Dental Center of the Carolinas based in Winston-Salem. Kelly is accused of lying to patients. In addition to putting nine patients under sedation when he did not have an active permit to do so.

Effective this week, the State Board of Dental Examiners barred Dr. Andrew Kelly from operating his dental offices in Winston-Salem and Greensboro.

Among the issues, the state said it found incomplete patient records, inaccurate drug logs, and malpractice.

The board said three patients came forward with disturbing allegations of malpractice.

One patient, Theresa E., said she initially went in for an implant.

The report said Kelly put the implants in incorrectly, some to the point of piercing her sinus cavity.

Theresa said it took about three years dealing with Dr. Kelly before she finally got a second opinion. Another doctor discovered there was little to no bone left from the trauma.

Theresa never got a refund and is now forced to use dentures.

The State Board of Dental Examiners said Dr. Kelly also allowed his sedation permit to expire but still used it on nine patients.

On top of that, when the board questioned his actions, investigators said he submitted fake documents and a fake check to cover it up.

The State Board of Dental Examiners ordered his license to be revoked effective May 1st, 2024.

We've reached out to Dental Center of the Carolinas for comment and are waiting to hear back.
