Whoa! Escaped horses halt morning commute

UPDATE:

A herd of horses that ran down a main road in East Tennessee apparently got out of their stables after a branch came down on a nearby fence.

A spokesperson from the Five Oaks stables where a herd of horses escaped from last week said they didn't have any staff up there late at night during the all the wind, and woke up that morning to calls from their friends saying they had seen the herd on the move.

The horses trotted down the Parkway in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge on Friday morning, bringing the morning commute to a stop and tourists from their hotels to see the spectacle.

"They [the herd] all kind of like to follow this one little donkey so he got out and they followed him right out!" said the spokesperson. "Luckily it all ended well and nobody got hurt."

Police rounded up the horses and brought them back to the stables.

The spokesperson for Five Oaks Stables said they are thinking about renaming the trouble-causing donkey "Houdini" and they are just happy no one was injured during their daring escape.

Original Story:

Morning commuters met a different kind of traffic jam Friday on one busy East Tennessee road.

Instead of fighting the typical crawl of cars on the Parkway in Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, drivers had to deal with an escaped herd of horses.

Yes, horses.

The herd of about 30 escaped near the Five Oaks Mall around 8 a.m. and came trotting, one after the other, right down the middle of the four lane highway.

According to the Sevierville Police Department, many of the horses ran into Pigeon Forge and officers were able to round them up and get them back to the stables.

“I was so mad because I thought there was some accident, and I drove up into the middle of dozens of horses,” said Marvyl Cockrell, who witnessed the grand escape. “I’ve seen some crazy things on the Parkway, but this is by far the most incredible and surprising!”

Fortunately, none of the horses were hurt and somehow, the herd didn’t cause any crashes!

No word yet on how they managed to get loose from Five Oaks Stables.

The horses running loose in Pigeon Forge on the Parkway this morning! It sure was a sight to see!
