Woman Charged With Speeding In Crash That Killed Elkin Tow Truck Driver

Benny Sprinkle was killed while attempting to load a car onto a rollback on January 19.

ELKIN, N.C. — Police have issued charges a month and a half after a tow truck driver unexpectedly died after he was hit by a driver while loading a car onto his rollback. 

The accident happened on January 19, 2019, around 7:30 p.m., on Hwy 268 West By-Pass in Elkin. The accident involved a vehicle driven by Dorothy Dowell of Roaring River, and Benny Gray Sprinkle of State Road.

Sprinkle was attempting to load a vehicle onto rollback when he was hit and killed by Dowell's vehicle. This week, the investigation regarding the accident has been completed by the Surry County District Attorney’s Office.

In a release, Elkin Police state that Sprinkle's family "knows that it was an accident and there was no intent involved. The family feels that everyone involved has suffered long enough and has reached out to the Dowell family to help them get through this crisis as well."

Police say, after a meeting with the DA's Office, the Elkin Police Department and Sprinkle’s family, police charged Dowell with driving too fast for the conditions of the roadway.
