GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro woman won $1 million thanks to her losing scratch-off ticket.
That's right. Maria Moreno had a losing scratch-off ticket, but she entered her ticket into the $10 Million Spectacular Second Chance drawing. She couldn't believe she'd won when she got the call from lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Listen to the phone call here.
“I was sobbing," Moreno said. “It was overwhelming.”
NC Lottery officials said there were more than one million entries.
Moreno said she always enters her losing tickets into the second-chance drawings.
“I always tell people to do the second chance because you never know,” Moreno said. “I’m the walking example of that.”
Moreno collected her winnings on Monday. She chose the lump sum of $600,000. After taxes, she took home $429,000.
She said she plans to pay off her mortgage and possibly take a family trip to Japan.
Players can get a second chance with their $10 Million Spectacular scratch-off tickets by scanning the tickets into their lottery accounts. The tickets are then automatically entered into the drawing. Moreno won the first of four top prizes. The second drawing is July 3.
