Mom Dies 3 Years After Waking From a Coma in Tennessee

Sharista Giles passed away Monday morning after three years of complications.

A Sweetwater mother died Monday morning after years of health complications.

Sharista Giles was in a car accident in late 2014 that caused brain damage and put her in a coma. She was a passenger in a car with her two friends when the crash happened. They were heading back from a concert in Nashville when her mom says the car hydroplaned.

"She tried to speak and she could move her hands and stuff. Since the crash Sharista was basically bed ridden," Beverly Giles, Sharista's Aunt, said.

Early Monday morning, Sharista passed away after a long, hard fight to stay alive.

"Her dad called me and I couldn't understand him. He just said that he needed me. They took her to UT Medical, but she was gone before I got there," Beverly Giles said.

Sharista leaves behind a 3-year-old boy. When she was in the car accident in 2014, she was four months pregnant and her son, Leighton, who was born weighing just two pounds.

Now, he's happy, healthy and has a supportive family that call him "miracle boy."

The Giles family is still working on funeral arrangements at this time. Sharista would've been 23-years-old in July.
