Florida man paints house to look like fly in protest of city ordinance

BRADENTON, Fla. -- How do you make a colorful statement and take on city hall at same time? A family in Bradenton, Fla., took on that task after being cited by city code enforcement workers.

The family told WFLA-TV they were tired of receiving citations and they wanted the whole city to know it.

So, they painted their house to look like the American flag.

According to the station, Brent Greer hopes the message is loud and clear. The new paint job is unmistakable - the front of the home is a giant flag.

Back in February, a city code enforcement officer responded to a complaint because a Christmas tree was still displayed in front of the home.

While on site, the officer noticed a long list of other code violations like problems with old paint and windows.

City of Bradenton Code Compliance Manager Volker Reiss told the station that some substandard housing conditions were found. The family were warned to fix the violations or face fines of up to $250 a day.

Greer says he has a few more important things to worry about and doesn't plan on pay any of the fines.

He and his wife are planning to attend a hearing with the code enforcement board on June 17.

After that, the board could decide whether to start issuing them the fines.
