GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.' Tuesday is my last day working from home and I know - you all have been dying to hear my opinion on it - so here we go.
I must say, I like working on my couch, in comfy pants, with a cup of coffee. I like that my pantry is a few steps away. I like that my apartment has a lot of natural light and fewer people stare at me when I have my hourly dance break.
But, it's not all fun and games. I miss my coworkers. It's harder to concentrate at times. It's more difficult to communicate with people through email and phone than just walking over to them. Oh, and my pantry is just a few steps away.
It will be an adjustment after more than year of being here but I'm ready to be back.
Many smart people have done studies about how working from home affects us. Most agree that mental and physical health suffer when we are at the home office. One theory is that we can never escape our job when there's not physical separation between work and home. Others think not having the structure of a traditional workday is to blame. And some hypothesize that it's the lack of support from coworkers and managers that gets us down.
That's not to say it's all bad - but I'm ready to pack all this up and bring it back to the station fulltime.
I also think this is just another sign that things will get better. We may never be back to normal but I'll take one step closer.
