City data shows Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro has had dozens of vehicle crashes this year

A woman who was hit by a truck shares her story, she's grateful the driver pulled over once it happened.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro has had dozens of vehicle crashes this year.

WFMY News 2 learned that on Elm Street alone 41 vehicle crashes took place in 2024.

Sherry Royal told us she was hit by a truck during her lunch break last week.

She was trying to cross South Elm and East McGee Street in broad daylight.

Royal said the pedestrian walk light came on and she stepped into the crosswalk.

"I didn't see the truck coming or anything, I was just walking in the crosswalk," she recalled, "The next thing I know, I am on the ground and getting road rash."

The traffic report confirms Royal did everything right by staying in the crosswalk. Greensboro police said the driver failed to reduce speed and did not give her the right of way.

"His mirror was turned and he looked back and he saw me laying in the street," Royal explained, "He pulled over and came over, I was very fortunate that he did stop."

GPD said Memorial Day through Labor Day is known as the 100 most deadliest days of the year.

"That's when a lot of our fatalities occur and all those serious injury wrecks occur because there's more miles being driven," GPD Sgt. A.D. Reed said.

He said pedestrians always have the right away in a crosswalk.

"If the pedestrian has entered the crosswalk and they are crossing, you have to allow for them to cross," Sgt. Reed said.

Royal is urging everyone to be aware of both pedestrians and drivers.

"This could've been so much worse...another half a step and I might not of even be here," Royal recalled, "We just have to take into consideration others, it's not just you it's your surroundings."

The City of Greensboro has a Streetscape Master Plan for Downtown. Some goals include improving the pedestrian experience.
