Driver killed in head-on crash with tractor-trailer identified

The crash shut down US-29 southbound in High Point for several hours.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Police identified a man killed in a head-on crash on US-29 southbound in High Point Tuesday.

The crash happened on US-29 between I-74 West and Baker Road around 1:40 p.m. and shut down the highway for several hours.

Police said 56-year-old Leo Rideaux was driving a pickup truck and crossed the median, hitting a tractor-trailer head-on. Rideaux then collided with an SUV behind the tractor-trailer.

Investigators said Rideaux lost control after swerving to go around a car that was slowing to make a right turn onto Durand Avenue.

Police said Rideaux died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.
