Red light cameras may come back to Greensboro

The city says they want to pinpoint five intersections with a high number of deadly crashes throughout Greensboro.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Red Light Camera Program may return to the City of Greensboro.

It was cut nearly two decades ago due to legal issues.

The city said the main difference is the placement of the cameras. This time, it will use data to identify the top five crash intersections and put cameras there.

This is in an effort to curb bad behavior in high-traffic areas. The city said studies show this can reduce crashes in intersections by nearly 40%.

"We have had a number of fatality collisions which is a concern to us. Along with our city council members and staff members we want to look at different ways that we can address that and how can we create situations that are safe for our community," GSO Assistant City Manager Nathaniel Davis said.

The price for the program ranges between $300,000.00 to $400,000.00.

Due to state law, 90% of the revenue from red light camera tickets will go to the local school system and 10% to the city.

This is the same as it was decades ago.

"My professional opinion is, I don't want us to get hung up over percentages. We are not in this just for revenue," Davis said, "We are in this to identify ways to create safety for the community."

This is a discussion at this point, and the city has not pinpointed a company to contract with.

The assistant city manager plans to present the program to the city council in the next few months.
