GREENSBORO, N.C. — April is over, and now that we look back on it we are realizing something. It was quite dry! In fact, April was one of the drier months our area has seen over the last several years. That puts us at risk of developing a drought as the sun keeps shining and temperatures continue to rise. Here's what the WFMY News 2 Weather team found.

How dry was it in April?

Take a look at the table below. We list the 5 driest months of the last 4 years, since 2020. You'll notice most of them are below two inches. Most months for us have been 3 to 4 inches of rain.

This April, we only picked up 1.23" of rain. That's our driest month since November 2021 - the last time we had less than an inch of rain in a month.

To paint you a better perspective, normal rainfall in the Triad is around 3.78" for the month of April. That's just over 2.5" below normal!

The Latest Drought Report

As the sun gets stronger and temperatures climb in to the 80s & 90s, our soil will only get drier. The latest drought monitor shows abnormally dry conditions not only stretch across the whole Piedmont, but for the majority (60%) of North Carolina.

Since last week, D0 (abnormally dry) now covers about 21% more area due to limited rainfall and warming temperatures. The good news: there is relief on the way!

Much-needed rain on the way

A cold front will approach this weekend and likely stall across the Carolinas, bringing better rain chances for the area. Occasional showers and an isolated storm or two is also possible. We'll also be cooler in the 70s this weekend.
