National Weather Service: EF-1 tornado confirmed in Wilkes County

Watch the moment a tornado pummeled through Wilkes County.

MORAVIAN FALLS, N.C. — Crews from the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, VA surveyed tornado damage in Wilkes County on Friday. 

The NWS confirmed it was an EF-1 twister that touched down in the county on Thursday night. The tornado was on the ground for three minutes, starting near Moravian Falls, and then dissipating near Main Street in Wilkesboro. 

  • 105-110 mph winds
  • Path length of two miles
  • 300 yards wide
  • No injuries

One woman shared a video with WFMY News 2 showing an apparent funnel cloud near Moravian Falls, NC. The video was taken around 6:40 p.m. - during the tornado warning for Wilkes County. 

The NWS said they are seeing a second swath of damage in the Ronda area. They are still trying to determine whether it was a tornado.
