Vault Visit | Roy Williams announced as UNC's men's basketball head coach

On April 13, 2003, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill welcomed a familiar name back home.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year... WFMY News 2 turns 75! So to celebrate... We're opening the WFMY News 2 vault. 

On April 13, 2003, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill welcomed a familiar name back home. 

Roy Williams, a UNC alumnus, had played under Dean Smith and served as an assistant coach before becoming head coach at Kansas.

He led the Jayhawks for 15 years, including four final four appearances before coming back to Carolina. 

In his time at UNC, Williams led the tar heels to nine regular-season ACC titles, three ACC tournament titles and three national championships.

He retired in 2021 but still travels supporting the team.
