Vault Visit | Boxing champion Joe Louis visits Greensboro

On March 25, 1971, the Brown Bomber made a visit to Greensboro.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — This year WFMY News 2 turns 75 and to celebrate, we are opening the News 2 Vault.

On March 25, 1971, the Brown Bomber was in Greensboro!

Boxing champion Joe Louis was in Greensboro to referee a wrestling match.

WFMY's sports team asked Louis for his comments on the fight of the century. Of course, that's the match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier which happened a few weeks earlier.

"Frazier can't change his style and Clay can't change his style and Clay can't change his style. I think that Clay would be able to hit Frazier more often than Frazier would be able to hit him," Louis said. "So, if it happens in the next 6-7 months, your money would be on Ali, I'd have to go with Ali."

Frazier and Ali had a rematch in 1974 and Louis was right -- Ali won.
