What can go wrong if your kids not ready for a sleepover

Blanca Cobb explains how to figure out if your kids are ready for a sleepover and what can go wrong.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With summer just around the corner and school letting out, many kids will look forward to fun nights with friends. And what better way to celebrate friendship than with a good old-fashioned sleepover? That's right, today is National Sleepover Day!

Sleepovers are a rite of passage for many children. They provide a chance to bond with friends, share secrets, and create lasting memories. Sleepovers are also a way to keep the fun going at the end of the day.

There are a few ways to know if your child is ready for a sleepover. First, think about your child's age and independence level. Are they comfortable staying at their friends' homes for long periods of time? Can they use the restroom by themselves? Second, think about their temperament. Is your child easily scared or anxious? Finally, have they talked about spending the night with friends? Do they show any interest?

There are a few downsides to sleepovers. Some kids can get overstimulated to the point where they can't settle in for a good night's sleep or are a little cranky the next day. Also, some kids might not be ready for a sleepover but might feel pressure from their friends. Some might not want to stay the whole night and want to come back home. This is why it's important to talk to the host parents about these potential concerns and include any talks about activities like video gaming, TV time, and sodas and snacks. Make sure to talk about safety, such as guns, in the home. It might feel awkward, but it's essential for your child's safety.
